TOOLS NEEDED: Espresso machine, milk frother or a whisk and a glass.

What could be more classic than a vanilla latte? Regardless of the time of year, the weather, or the mood you are in, this drink remains one of most popular choices in coffee shops.

Next time you are about to spend $5 on your third vanilla latte in one week, consider using this simple recipe to make it at home! Your wallet will thank you.

  • 2 ounces espresso
  • 10 ounces milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • Pour the espresso into a mug
  • Place the milk in a wide glass or glass jar and microwave on high power for 30 seconds until it is very hot but not boiling. Alternatively, heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat for about 5 minutes until very hot but not boiling, watching it carefully
  • Add the vanilla and sugar to the hot milk and stir until the sugar dissolves
  • Using a milk frother, froth the milk until you don’t see any bubbles and you have a thick froth, 20 to 30 seconds. Swirl the glass and lightly tap it on the counter repeatedly to pop the larger bubbles. Repeat this step as needed
  • Using a spoon to hold back the foam, pour the sweetened vanilla milk into the espresso. Spoon the remaining foam on top

Recipe Tip

Omit the sugar for an unsweetened vanilla latte.
