The origins of this age-old classic are often debated. Legend has it that it started with those little leprechauns. More reliably though, it is thought to have been created by an Irish chef named Joseph Sheridan who wanted to welcome some Americans to his restaurant with a combination of the American staple—coffee—with an Irish twist. If you are new to Irish drinks, this will surely give you a warm welcome!

  • 8 ounces hot coffee
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • ¼ cup marshmallow creme
  • 1½ ounces Irish whiskey
  • Whipped cream, for garnish

  • In an Irish coffee mug, stir together the coffee and brown sugar
  • Add the whiskey and stir again
  • Serve topped with whipped cream, as desired
