TOOLS NEEDED: Espresso machine.

This classic Italian dessert gets its name from the Italian word meaning “drowned.” The affogato consists of a scoop of vanilla gelato “drowned” in a shot of fresh hot espresso—two quintessential Italian ingredients.

This is, by far, one of the easiest coffee recipes you can find, but incredibly satisfying. Affogato would be an unexpected and sophisticated dessert to serve guests at your next dinner party.

The contrasts between hot and cold, liquid and solid, and bitter and sweet make this drink a good choice for the one who can’t make up their mind.

  • 2 ounces espresso
  • 1 scoop vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream

  • Place the gelato in a small glass, pour the espresso on top, and dig in

Recipe Tip

The coffee world is continuously experimenting with ways to vary this classic, and you should, too! Variations include using ice cream instead of gelato, experimenting with ice cream/gelato flavors, and adding some Irish cream or hazelnut liqueur for a spiked twist.
